KGOA Excursion Workshop led by Prof. Hans Bjarne Thomsen
The Musée d’ethnographie Neuchâtel (MEN) has one of the most varied and interesting collections of East Asian objects in Switzerland. This is the repository of the objects related to Aimé Humbert (1819-1900) with over 2500 objects from Japan. It is also a repository of a large number of early photographs from Japan. Finally, the storage also houses a large number of un-researched objects from Japan, China, and Korea that entered the collection from the nineteenth century onwards.
The object of the course is to spend extended time with one collection in order to learn more about the objects and about the methods and techniques of museum research. For the advanced students it would also be an excellent opportunity to work intensively on one collection and to fully experience the process of analyzing and cataloguing works of art.
The project will be a joint one between the museum and the UZH and will also feature collaboration with Prof. Dr. Satomi Yamamoto, Kyoritsu Women’s University, Tokyo, leading scholar of medieval Buddhist art of Japan, especially focusing on the six realm paintings and Prof. Dr. Akira Takagishi, Tokyo University, leading scholar of medieval Japanese art, especially focusing on Tosa school paintings. The project will run in the period September 8-12 and will involve daily sessions in the storage as well as discussions, lectures, and research time with art historical texts and other resources.
**Only open to Registered UZH Students**
