The subject of votive tablets has seldom been studied. These small terracotta objects bring a new and complementary light on Buddhism in South-East Asia. Mainly produced in Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Indonesia, they are among the first Buddhist objects created, and they are still actively present in Thailand as amulets.

They allow on one hand the study of particular iconographies, which can be linked to the most famous cultures or dynasties (Pyu, Mon, Khmer, Bagan, Haripunjaya, Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, Srivijaya) and they attest, on the other hand, of regional and trans-regional exchanges.

The Rietberg Museum in Zürich has recently received a donation of more than 1000 objects originating from South-East Asia, and among them were 600 votive tablets. 6 of them were tested by thermoluminescence and the results are generating further questions.
