Excursion to the Ariana Museum (Geneve)

November 24, 2015

Free

Prof. Hans B. Thomsen

The Ariana Museum in Geneva (full name: Musée suisse de la céramique et du verre) is one of Europe’s largest depositories of Chinese and Japanese ceramics, in particular porcelains. They have superb exhibits in the permanent exhibition rooms and literally thousands of East Asian objects in their storage areas. The curator of the collection, Dr. Anne-Claire Schumacher, will show us around, in both the display areas and in the storage and will highlight a number of important objects in her collection. It will be a good experience to see the holdings of a major museum and to learn about East Asian ceramics and their reception in the West. From next year onwards, the Ariana Museum will engage in a multi-year survey projects with KGOA and the National Museum for Japanese History in Japan, with the goal of creating an exhibition of Japanese ceramics. A catalogue of the collection is also planned. KGOA students would also be welcome to participate in this upcoming research project, and this excursion would be a good way for interested students to see objects in the museum collection.

Die Exkursion kann nicht regulär gebucht werden. Die Anmeldung (bitte auch Matrikel- Nummer angeben) erfolgt bis zum 31. Oktober 2015 per Email an Natasha Fischer-Vaidya: natasha.fischer@khist.uzh.ch
